Rainbow Moon Trading have been involved in projects within rural areas as a three year contract for South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). A good example is the Kuruman project which is taking place in an area known as Maruping and Batlharos under the Ga-segonyana Municipality, Molopo project, Molopo in the semi-rural of Mahikeng, Mareetsane and Mathopestad (Potchefstroom), Groot Marico, Rustenburg (Kanana, Meriting, Paul Kruger Farm, Maanhaarand) project.
We have developed a good working relationship, the tribal Authority and community leaders as stakeholders have formed part of our advisory committee with a very positive support as we have not experienced any problems since our inception in August 2008 to date as the contract was advertised and the company contract has extended to 2014.
Meeting with the local tribal authorities has never been a challenge because of the cultural procedures that need we followed and adhered to at all time. We have been able to do all these and the project in running smoothly thus far. Having been able to work with both the local tribal authorities and the local municipalities has been a great achievement for us because usually the two do not cooperate with each other.
There was also a need to identify and involve local enterprises in the project for things like trailer, tractor, trucks and water tanks to plough back to the community. This has been done and we had local people supplying services and benefiting from the project.
We have also conducted interviews to employ contractors from within the community with the tribal office full involvement and the local people that were recruited to work in the project.
Ms. Chabedi and all PM’s have attended and completed Health & Safety level 1, 3 and First Aid level 1 and 2 with NOSA. She has also done Fire Awareness training in 2007. The project managers are as well trained in health and safety and first aid.
Every morning before work teams should hold a 5 to 10 minutes toolbox meeting together with a full time learner ship of best management practice and Cemp where they discuss health and safety matters. All hazards relating to the work to be done will be identified and listed and then discussed with the teams. All equipments to be used will be inspected to check if they are safe to use. Incidents will be recorded and reported to the Project Manager and all records will be kept on site.
Vehicle checklist has to be done daily and full PPE to be adhered to and prioritized. No employee is supposed to enter site without PPE. An emergency form with all contact details for ambulance, SAPS, fire stations, project manager, site engineer, will be kept on site at all times and updated when necessary.
The Health & Safety representative will keep on-site the health and safety rules and procedures document at all times. A monthly health and safety committee meeting is held the minutes thereof filed by the project manager and the office. Injuries and near-misses are as well recorded and reported at all the times so as to adjudicate an incident free work area.
We as well keep all required documents such as safety plan, environmental plans, best management practice, construction and environmental management plan on site at all the times and as required according to the memorandum of agreement with the clients.
